Cause: ex-sarthe. built in 1908. owned at time of loss by cia naviera vascongada, bilbao. two boilers, triple expansion engine, single shaft. spanish flag. passage bilbao for middlesbrough. cargo iron ore. followng collision with 'drake' class cruiser hms king alfred (14500 dwt).

SUPERSTRUCTURE HAS COLLAPSED AND PART OF IT LIES BROKEN ON THE SEABED. MUCH OF THE STEEL STRUCTURE IS BROKEN WITH VERY JAGGED EDGES. WRECK PARTIALLY INTACT, LISTING TO PORT. ADDITIONAL DATA IN THE WC, POSSIBLY A BUOY ATTACHED TO ROPE HAS GIVEN NEW SHOAL DEPTH. STRONG MAGNETIC ANOMALY. (MMT, HI 1473). AMEND DW 27.5MTRS IN REVISED POSITION. UK NM 46/5833/16.
