About this Tidal current charts

The course of the currents in the North Sea is broadly known and included in forecast models, which are documented in the well-known HP33 current atlas of the Hydrographic Service of the Dutch Royal Navy. And therefore also in the Tidal Current Atlas App.

Atmospheric influences
However, the flow speed and the course of the currents are also subject to - especially - the air pressure, wind direction and speed in the atmosphere. These are obviously not included in the wave models. To fill this gap, Rijkswaterstaat has developed a flow model in which it incorporates the expected influence of the atmosphere.

Updated daily
The daily output of this model can be found on this page in the form of these flow maps. These are retrieved and processed by our servers every night and apply for the 48 hours after the calculation moment of this model (the run time, as shown below each image). The time of each chart is shown in UTC, which is two hours ahead of Dutch time, which is shown in brackets.
