Cause: engaged by hms thrasher about 10 miles se of flamborough head and sunk by depth charges.

LEAST E/S DEPTH 20.7 IN GEN DEPTH 25.7MTRS. NO SCOUR. DCS3 HT 4.1MTRS, LENGTH 45MTRS. INTACT WK LYING 010/190 DEG. SONAR TRACES INDICATE PROBABLE SUBMARINE. (HMS ECHO, HI 64/79). INS AS WK 20.7MTRS.

- NM 655/81. 5.11.91 WK IN 535502N, 000442E REPORTED TO BE A SUBMARINE AND BELIEVED TO BE THAT OF UC 39. ALSO REPORTED S OF WHERE CHARTED. (SEC(NS)B, LM DTD 29.10.91). NCA HH100/351/06 8.4.93 WK IN 535536N, 000436E DIVED. IDENTIFIED AS UC 39 BY INSCRIPTION ON PROPELLER. LIES WITH A STBD LIST AND IS STARTING TO BREAK UP. STANDS 2MTRS HIGH. (G WADSWORTH, 1.3.93). HH100/351/07 23.7.93 DIVED ON 1.7.93 IN 535531N, 000442.5E USING GPS. STANDS 4MTRS HIGH. LIES 010/190 DEG, BOW S, WITH STBD LIST AND DAMAGED BOW. 6 MINE CHUTES VISIBLE FOR'D OF CONNING TOWER POSN. CONNING TOWER ITSELF LIES ON SEABED. APPARENTLY SALVAGE WORK HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT - PROPELLERS AND DECK GUN MISSING (ONE PROP IS IN BRIDLINGTON HARBOUR MUSEUM). SMALL AMOUNT OF FISHING GEAR IS SNAGGED ON WK. (D ROBINSON, HUMBERSIDE POLICE U/WATER SEARCH UNIT). SEP 2021/000166150 17.9.20 EXAM’D 25.3.21 IN 5355.554N, 0004.608E [WGD]. LEAST M/B DEPTH 20.83MTRS IN GEN DEPTH 24MTRS. LENGTH 37.5MTRS, WIDTH 7.41MTRS, HT 4.0MTRS. ORIENTATION 170/350 DEGS. LARGELY INTACT THOUGH STARTING TO BREAK APART.
