Shipwreck details

Name: UB 109

Length 55.5 meter, width: 5.8 meter, tonnage 650 ton

Cause: Mined.location ? english channelub-109 was a u-boat in the german imperial navy during world war i. she was commissioned on 7 nov 1917. on 29 aug 1918, she hit a mine and sank in the dover barrage, an underwater blockade to stop german submarines attempting to use the english channel during world war i. the barrier consisted of minefields laid between belgium and dover at the outbreak of war. she had a loss of 29 men.

- NM 485/78. H4199/78 27.10.78 LOCATED 19.10.77 IN 510341N, 011414E [OGB] USING TRISPONDER [2 LOP]. LEAST E/S DEPTH 15.4 IN GEN DEPTH 22MTRS. NO SCOUR, DCS3 HT 6.8MTRS, LENGTH 55MTRS. APPEARS TO BE IN TWO HALVES LYING CLOSE TOGETHER. LIES 020/200DEGS. (HMS BULLDOG, HI 35/77). NFA. H1310/82/22 13.8.82 AFTER EXTENSIVE EXPLORATION BELIEVE THIS WK TO BE UB 109. STANDS UPRIGHT SOME 7MTRS ABOVE SEABED, WITH LAST 7MTRS OF STERN MISSING. (P G WEATHERLEY, 8.8.82). H1310/83/4 6.9.83 DIVED ON 6.8.83. LIES IN TWO PARTS, ABOUT 30FT APART. STERN HALF, WITH CONNING TOWER LIES TO THE EAST, ACROSS THE TIDE. GUN IS MOUNTED AFT OF CONNING TOWER & THE PERISCOPE IS PROTRUDING ABOUT 12FT. (T W BENNETTO, 2.9.83). HH242/400/08 16.9.96 LOCATED IN 510344.0N, 011409.2E [WGD] USING DGPS. SWEPT CLEAR AT 13.0MTRS IN GEN DEPTH 22MTRS. (NP 1016, HI 711, HN DTD 22.8.96).

- NM 3506/96. HH090/711/01 28.1.97 EXAM'D 14.8.96 IN 510344N, 011408E [WGD] USING DGPS. SWEPT CLEAR AT 13.0, FOUL AT 13.3MTRS. LEAST E/S DEPTH 18 IN GEN DEPTH 22MTRS. NO SCOUR. DCS3 HT 4MTRS. LENGTH 70MTRS, WIDTH 14MTRS. LIES 040/220DEGS. IN TWO DISTINCT PIECES WITH SMALL AMOUNT OF SCATTERED DEBRIS. (NP 1016, HI 711). AMEND TO REVISED POSN. BR STD. 1.10.98 STATED TO HAVE BEEN LOCATED IN 510341N, 011414E [OGB]. BLOWN IN TWO WITH THE STERN SECTION 30FT TO THE WEST OF THE MAIN PART OF THE WK. HATCHES ARE OPEN AND PERISCOPE FULLY EXTENDED.
