Shipwreck details

Name: HMS BALFOUR

Length 40.8 meter, width: 7 meter, tonnage 285 ton

Cause: Built in 1912 by cochrane & sons, selby. originally owned by pickering and halby's steam trawling co and registered in hull. hired in 1915. one boiler, triple expansion engine of 65 hp, single shaft. one 3-pdr gun, smaller gun aft. was escorting lancs & yorks railway ss nidd to calais. whilst manoeuvering to engage a surfaced enemy submarine (ub 274) ran under nidd's bows and was stuck on port side. vessel quickly sank.

H2979/74 FOUND IN APPROX 503954N, 002348E [OGB]. POSN BY DECCA. APPARENTLY ARMED TRAWLER WITH 2 GUNS, ABOUT 500TONS, LYING N/S WITH BOWS S. DIESEL ENGINED BUT WITH CARGO OF COAL. STANDING UPRIGHT MAXIMUM HEIGHT 25FT. BRIDGE SUPERSTRUCTURE GONE. APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN RAMMED PORT SIDE JUST ATOP FORWARD HOLD. (E GILES). H4959/73 7.5.75 LOCATED 22.10.74 IN 503937N, 002407E [OGB] USING HIFIX [2 LOP]. LEAST E/S DEPTH 20.2M IN GEN DEPTH 26-27MTRS. NO SCOUR. LENGTH FROM DCS3 75FT. (HMS BEAGLE, HI 55/74). BR STD. H4242/75 25.5.76 SHOWN IN 503940.8N, 002350.3E [OGB] ON FAIR SHEET. (HMS BEAGLE). AMEND POSN. BR STD. H4121/76 24.8.76 EXAM'D 3.6.76 IN LISTED POSN. SWEPT CLEAR AT 19.4MTRS, FOUL AT 20.4MTRS.
