Cause: built in 1881 by j l thompson & sons, sunderland. owned at the time of loss by j hopper, sunderland. passage seaham for st nazaire. sank while under tow of steam tug 'dominion' after being damaged during a collision with german barque 'pirat'. (sibi).

NO MASTS DETECTED, BUTS HOLDS EITHER SIDE CENTRAL BRIDGE STRUCTURE. (HMS BULLDOG, HI 37A/77). CHART AS WK 23.0MTRS. BR STD. H1310/83/4 22.7.83 DIVED ON SEVERAL TIMES. WK HAS '3-ISLAND' CONFIGURATION, WITH BRIDGE AMIDSHIPS AND 2 HOLDS EITHER SIDE. CARGO COAL. APPARENTLY A WW1 CASUALTY JUDGING BY CONDITION OF WK. HULL INTACT EXCEPT FOR DAMAGE ON STBD BOW. IRON 4-BLADED PROPELLER [SPARE IN AFT HOLD]. HIGHEST POINTS ARE STEERING ENGINE AMIDSHIPS AND WINCHES ON BOW. LIES IN 4.5MTR HOLE WITH STERN APPROX W. IRON TELEGRAPH ENSCRIBED 'MECHAN & SONS, GLASGOW' RECOVERED. (T W BENNETTO, 18.7.83). H1310/29/86 24.11.86 NOW CONSIDERED MOST PROBABLY WK OF SS 'ASHFORD'.
