Cause: Built in 1882 of iron by irvine & co, west hartlepool. owned at time of loss by english ss co, middlesbrough. two boilers, compound expansion engine of 156 nhp, single shaft. passage bilbao for middlesbrough. sank following collision with schooner coal tar, of london, in wnw force 4. (sibi).

HAS CAST IRON PROPELLER OF ABOUT 15FT DIAMETER. (E GILES). H4959/73 23.4.75 EXAM'D 15.10.74 IN 503935N, 001250E [OGB] USING HIFIX [2 LOP]. LEAST E/S DEPTH 24.5 IN GEN DEPTH 29MTRS. NARROW SCOUR, 5FT DEEP, ON THE W SIDE OF WK. (E GILES, SUBSERVS, 13.11.76). 1.9.77 ABOVE DESCRIPTION (OF 11.11.76) CONFIRMED. THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT WK OF THE 'BRAUNTON' [SEE 20411]. THIS WOULD INDICATE THAT THIS IS NOT 'INGER'. ALSO FOUND WERE SOME ENGLISH PENNIES, THE LATEST DATE BEING 1897. MEASURED LENGTH 94MTRS, WIDTH 11.6MTRS. HAS TWO BOILERS AND A TRIPLE EXPANSION ENGINE. POSSIBLY 'PONTOS'. (J SMITH, EMAIL DTD 10.1.09). NCA. 10.8.11 LIES IN 5039.650N, 0012.750E [WGD]. HELM LOCATED BY J SMITH AND R KING (TUNBRIDGE WELLS SAC). ON THE CENTER BOSS WAS FOUND THE MAKER'S NAME: 'IRVINE & CO, WEST HARTLEPOOL, SHIP BUILDERS'. WK HAS TWO BOILERS AND A TWO CYLINDER ENGINE THUS WE CONSIDER THAT THIS IS 'STANHOPE', SUNK 16.3.1900. (J SMITH, EMAIL DTD 1.8.11). NCA. SEP 2015/000083466 8.2.16 EXAM'D 16.07.15 IN 5039.634N, 0012.766E [WGD]. LEAST M/B DEPTH 23.20MTRS IN GEN DEPTH 29.20MTRS. NO SCOUR, LENGTH 70MTRS, HT 6MTRS, WIDTH 25MTRS. BROKEN UP WK, PARTIALLY BURIED, STRONG MAGNETIC ANOMALY. (GARDLINE GEOSURVEY, HI 1477). AMEND DW 23MTRS IN REVISED POSN.
