Cause: Vessel, built in 1888 by harland & wolff and owned at the time of loss by peninsular & oriental steam navigation co., sank following a collision with german 4-masted barque 'pisagua' [2850 tons] while on passage tilbury to bombay. was being towed towards dover by newhaven tug 'alert' when she sank, having previously been abandoned. the 'oceana' was carrying a cargo of ?747,110 in gold and silver destined for port said and bombay all of which was recovered.
