Cause: Vessel, built in 1888 by harland & wolff and owned at the time of loss by peninsular & oriental steam navigation co., sank following a collision with german 4-masted barque 'pisagua' [2850 tons] while on passage tilbury to bombay. was being towed towards dover by newhaven tug 'alert' when she sank, having previously been abandoned. the 'oceana' was carrying a cargo of ?747,110 in gold and silver destined for port said and bombay all of which was recovered. CLOSE EXAMINATION OF RECORDS RENDERED SUGGESTS A DCS3 HT OF 10.6MTRS, WHILE THE SWEEP PLOT SHOWS PART OF THE WK CLEARED AT 10.8MTRS, NOT 11.2MTRS. IN ADDITION THERE IS A GAP IN THE SWEEP COVERAGE. AMEND TO WK 10.6MTRS.
