Cause: Built in 1854 by denny, dumbarton. owned at time of loss by w liddel. one boiler, compound inverted engine of 100hp, single shaft. machinery by c d holmes, hull. passage hull for antwerp. general cargo. sank following a collision in fog with ss adam smith.

LEAST E/S DEPTH 23.8 IN GEN DEPTH 29MTRS. NO SCOUR. DCS3 HT 5.9MTRS, LENGTH APPROX 125MTRS. APPARENTLY INTACT. LIES NNW/SSE AND GIVES GOOD SONAR RETURNS. (SOISS, HI 22). BR STD. H1310/88/48 27.9.88 WK IN 525153N, 013829E [OGB] USING DECCA. IDENTIFIED AS THE ALSTER. HULL IS COMPLETE, UPRIGHT AND LYING ACROSS THE TIDE APPROX NE/SW. STANDS 20FT HIGH. (M OXLADE, 1.9.88). HH100/351/01 21.11.89 IDENTIFIED AS THE ALSTER WHEN BELL WAS RECOVERED. NO OTHER WK IN CLOSE PROXIMITY. (M OXLADE). HH100/351/04 27.3.91 WK INTACT EXCEPT WHERE SUPERSTRUCTURE HAS COLLAPSED INTO HULL. STANDS APPROX 5 MTRS HIGH. WK HAS BEEN PURCHASED FROM ELLERMAN LINE SHIPPING CO. (R W HICKINBOTTOM, 24.2.91). 5.2.02 RECORD REVIEWED. AMEND TO SW 23MTRS. BR STD. HH100/351/18 21.8.02 DIVED ON 14.7.02, LIES IN 5251.750N, 00138.226E [WGD] USING GPS. BROKEN POTTERY SPREAD AROUND AND A NUMBER OF LARGE CAST IRON WAGON WHEELS. A SMALL AMOUNT OF OLD NETTING WAS SIGHTED. MARKED BY A 2 GALLON SIZE CHEMICAL CONTAINER AND A SMALLER 1FT DIAMETER ORANGE BUOY ON THE SAME LINE. HEIGHT OF WRECK BY E/S APPROX 3MTRS.
