Shipwreck details

Name: YARMOUTH

Length 74.7 meter, width: 9.5 meter, draught: 4.7, tonnage 806 ton

Cause: Built in 1903 by gourlay bros. owned at time of loss by the great eastern railway co. triple expansion engine of 202nhp for 14 knots. passage rotterdam for harwich. sailed at 1030 with crew of 20 and 433 tons of cargo. the deck cargo was said to be very heavy and amongst other items were three 3 ton pantechnicon vans filled with furniture. at about 1700 was observed by the gabbard lightship to be rolling heavily. she was seen to roll two or three times and then disappeared from sight. ss vienna made a search but only located floating cases of meat. the cruiser hms blake recovered one body in a lifebuoy marked 'yarmouth, harwich' and sighted one of the vans. it was assumed that the ship was lost with all hands. SCOUR DEPTH 1.4MTRS. DCS3 HT 6.3MTRS. LENGTH 70MTRS, WIDTH 5MTRS. LIES 050/230 DEGS. HAS MAGNETIC SIGNATURE. PARTIALLY BURIED, PROBABLY ON SIDE. (OCEONICS, HI 667). BR STD. HH100/351/11 19.3.96 HH100/351/11 19.3.96 LARGE WK LYING OVER ON ITS SIDE WITH THE HIGHEST POINT SOME 7MTRS ABOVE THE SEABED. SUPERSTRUCTURE STILL INTACT AND IN GOOD CONDITION. IT LOOKS LIKE A MODERN WRECK, POSSIBLY AFTER WWII. PROPELLERS HAVE BEEN REMOVED. (B HICKINBOTTOM). HH100/351/22 1.4.05 HH100/351/22 1.4.05 DIVED 15.8.04 IN 5201.48N, 0203.62E [WGD]. STANDS 6MTRS HIGH BY E/S. NO SCOUR, SEABED GRAVEL AND SILT. VISIBILTY IS VERY POOR AND THE WK IS NETTED. PLATE BEARING THE CREST OF THE GREAT EASTERN RAILWAY CO HAS BEEN RECOVERED, THUS WK IS CONSIDERED TO BE 'YARMOUTH'. GENERALLY INTACT AND ON HER SIDE. WILL BE DIVED FURTHER. CINC REQUESTED.
