Name: VIRGINIAN

Length 35.1 meter, width: 6.7 meter, draught: 3.4, tonnage 211 ton

Cause: Built in 1906 by cook, welton & gemmel, beverley. owned at time of loss by onward fishing co, grimsby. one boiler, triple expansion engine, single shaft. passage hull for fishing and return. sank following a collision with british ss empire rapier (7177 tons). sank within 10 minutes. crew recovered.

LEAST E/S DEPTH 21.7 IN GEN DEPTH 32MTRS. NO SCOUR. DCS3 HT 4.3MTRS, LENGTH 50MTRS, BEAM 4MTRS. APPARENTLY UPRIGHT, LYING 110/290 DEGS, WITH HIGHEST POINT TOWARDS E END. GOOD SONAR CONTACT. (HMS BEAGLE, HI 74). BR STD. HH100/351/05 29.5.92 DIVED ON AUG '91 IN 534027N, 004822E USING DECCA. POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED AS THE VIRGINIAN. BELL ENGRAVED '1907 GRIMSBY' RECOVERED. (R J COLLINSON, 28.4.92). NCA. HH100/350/20 5.9.03 POSN GIVEN AS 5340.850N, 0048.651E [WGD]. VESSEL WAS LARGELY INTACT WHEN BELL RECOVERED IN 1992. AT THAT TIME THE WHEELHOUSE WAS DOWN. WINCH IN PLACE IN FRONT OF WHEELHOUSE. VESSEL LISTING TO PORT ON A GRAVEL SEABED. (S OLD, E-MAIL DTD 18.7.03). NCA. 29.10.04 REMAINS INTACT WITH SOME PLATING FALLING FROM THE FRAMES. MAIN TRAWL WINCH DRUM LIES ON SEABED CLOSE TO PORT. WOODEN DECKING ROTTED AWAY ONLY STEEL RIBS REMAIN. PROPELLER STILL IN PLACE. SMALL SCOUR AT STERN. BOWS NW. (DIVER MAGAZINE, NOV 2004). NCA. 2.3.15 LOCATED IN 5340.854N, 0048.648E [WGD]. LEAST M/B DEPTH 27.89MTRS. LENGTH 15MTRS, WIDTH 6MTRS, HT 4MTRS. (CEFAS, SILVER PIT SURVEY 2014). LIES ?045/225 DEGS. COLLAPSED WITH BOWS ?NE. APPARENTLY MAINLY BURIED. NFS. NCA. SEP 2016/000091757 11.5.17 EXAM'D 30.10.16 IN 5340.855N, 0048.648E [WGD]. LEAST M/B DEPTH 26.78MTRS IN GEN DEPTH 31MTRS, LENGTH 21.7MTRS, WIDTH 6.0MTRS, HEIGHT 4.8MTRS, ORIENTATION 040/220 DEGS. WRECK IS LARGELY INTACT AND PARTIALLY BURIED, A STRONG SWATHE SIGNAL WAS RECORDED. (GARDLINE, HI 1492). AMEND DW 26.5MTRS IN REVISED POSITION.
