Shipwreck details

Name: HMS WAKEFUL

Length 95.1 meter, width: 9.1 meter, draught: 3.4, tonnage 1300 ton

Cause: a v/w class destoyer. torpedoed by german e-boat while evacuating british troops from dunkirk. broke in two and sank very quickly. great loss of life. (dod). sunk by german submarine s 30. about 100 of the 650 personnel onboard killed. (r verpoorte). not confirmed in axis submarine successes. 3.2.01 total complement was 675 of whom some 650 were lost. (the times, 3.2.01).

- NM 2246/63. H4029/63 23.1.84 SWEPT CLEAR AT 17.5MTRS IN 512246N, 024326E. (BELGIAN NM 135/83). AMEND TO SW 17.5MTRS IN REVISED POSN. BR STD. HH100/351/02 9.4.90 WK IN 512247N, 024326E REFERRED TO AS HMS WAKEFUL. (D TERMOTE, 26.3.90). HH100/351/01 1.6.90 DEFINITELY THE WK OF V & W TYPE DESTROYER. IN TWO PARTS LYING AT RIGHT ANGLES TO EACH OTHER. FOR'D SECTION (APPARENTLY) IS ABOUT 33MTRS LONG AND LIES ON PORT SIDE AND STANDS SOME 3.5MTRS PROUD OF SEABED. MUCH DEBRIS WIDELY SCATTERED AROUND. IT IS ORIENTATED 360/180 DEG. AFTER PART IS ON EVEN KEEL, LYING 270/090 DEG, WELL SETTLED INTO SEABED WITH SAND UP TO TOP ROW OF PORTHOLES ON PORT SIDE AND A DEEP SCOUR ON STARBOARD SIDE. IT IS ABOUT 33MTRS LONG AND THE BREAK IS NEAR THE SEARCHLIGHT PLATFORM. 4.7" GUNS LIE ON TOP WITH 2 TRIPLE TORPEDO TUBES. SCATTERED REMAINS OF FUNNELS, BOILERS AND OTHER MACHINERY LIE BETWEEN THE TWO PARTS. (D TERMOTE, 19.4.90). HH100/351/07 18.10.93 POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED AS WK OF HMS WAKEFUL BY SHIP'S CREST ON LIFEBOAT. (M R H VANALDERWEIRELDT, 30.9.93). 7.2.01 WK TO BE LIFTED IN 2002 AND MOVED INTO DREDGED TRENCH TO GIVE GREATER WATER DEPTH. (ARTICLE IN THE TIMES, 3.2.01). HH100/351/19 8.11.02 HMS WAKEFUL NOT LIKELY TO BE MOVED UNTIL 2003, IF EVER. (BELGIAN COAST HYDROGRAPHIC OFFICE).
