Shipwreck details

Name: HMS BASILISK

Length 95.1 meter, width: 10.1 meter, draught: 3.7, tonnage 1360 ton

Cause: built in 1930 by john brown & co. 3-drum boilers, turbine engines for 35 knots. four 4.7 inch, two 2 pdr, 5 machine guns. 8 torpedo tubes. badly damaged by bombs from german a/c during dunkirk evacuations in company with hms keith, hms shipjack and hms salamander. hms keith and hms shipjack were sunk and hms basilisk made for dover but sank on sandbank off de panne after an aerial attack. was later destroyed by two torpedoes fired by hms whitehall. (dods, sibi & r verpoorte).

H1310/81/29 16.11.81 DIVED ON. IDENTIFIED AS BRITISH WARSHIP, SIMILAR TO HMS WHITLEY, FROM BOILERS, 4.7INCH GUN MOUNTING AND SHELLS, DEPTH CHARGE ACCESSORIES, AND PORT HOLE WITH BROAD ARROW MARKING. NO SPECIFIC IDENTIFICATION YET. (J. COULON, 3.11.81). H1310/83/8 2.2.83 TWO PDR AMMUNITION FOUND ON WRECK, WHICH HAS A 4-TORPEDO TUBE MOUNTING & A SINGLE DEPTH CHARGE RAIL. THOUGH NOT POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED, THOUGHT TO BE HMS BASILISK. (J. COULON, 8.1.83). H1545/64 27.6.88 H1545/64 27.6.88 NOW SW 1.2MTRS IN 510816N, 023506E [EUR]. (OSTEND NM 11/89/88). BR STD. H1310/88/18 26.7.88 POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED AS HMS BASILISK FROM SHIP'S CREST ON GUN TAMPION FOUND ON SITE. (J COULON, 15.3.88). HH342/710/05 12.10.99 N CARD BUOY 'WK 1' NOW IN 5108.35N, 0235.13E. (BELGIAN NM 20/147/99). NCA. SEP 2010/000138707 18.10.10 SHOWN AS SW 1.1MTR [LAT] IN 5108.217N, 0235.021E [WGD] WITH UNLIT N CARD BUOY 'WK 1' ON BELGIAN 102 [NE 1.6.10, 1:60,000].
