Shipwreck details

Name: SITONA

Length 68.9 meter, width: 11.3 meter, draught: 4.9, tonnage 1143 ton
Load: coal

Cause: 3.5.41 bombed by german aircraft 3.5.41 while on passage blyth for london. sank early following day. (lloyds war losses). torpedoed by german aircraft. (ww2sl). in convoy with norwegian ss trajan. torpedo passed through the ship and detonated in the water beyond. crew abandoned but master and three men remained on board to arrange a tow. an escort vessel attempted to tow sitona clear of the dowsing channel but she developed a severe list, the crew were recovered and vessel sank. (r young)
