Cause: 20.12.16 built in 1892 by messers john jones & sons of liverpool for the sligo steam navigation co. fitted out to high standard for saloon and deck passengers. carriage of cattle was very important, so careful consideration given to cattle fittings. triple expansion engines also by jones and sons of 1000 ihp. trial speed 13 knots. lit throughout by electricity. passage liverpool for sligo with general cargo.hit a mine and foundered 11m se by s of the chicken lt. 3 crew lost. lifeboat marked 'ss liverpool, of sligo' and wreckage washed up at port st mary on 20.12.16. (a corkill). after hitting mine was towed by the ss 'ruby'. initially the tow was to douglas but the weather prevented the stern first tow. course then set for belfast but about 0530 a bigger list developed, the tow was cut and the vessel disappeared. (a corkill).

(GARDLINE, HI 706).

PORTHOLE BY J ROBY RECOVERED. FIRM MADE SUCH ITEMS BETWEEN 1880 AND 1910 APPROX, MOSTLY FOR PASSENGER STEAMERS. ITEM NUMBERED 22. NO DISTINGUISHABLE HOLD, MANY BRASS FITTINGS AND THE PORTHOLE SUGGEST WK TO BE LIVERPOOL. (A CORKILL). HH100/351/12 16.5.97 HH100/351/12 16.5.97 IDENTIFIED AS WK OF LIVERPOOL. BELL RECOVERED. QUITE A FEW MILES FROM HER OFFICIAL POSN OF LOSS WHERE SHE HIT THE MINE. BUT WAS LATER TOWED TOWARDS DOUGLAS BY STEAMER BEFORE SINKING. OTHER ITEMS RECOVERED WERE TELEPRAPH, STEERING COLUMN, COMPASS, TWO STANDS, ONE FOR COMPASS, AND PORTHOLES. LARGE AMOUNTS OF CARGO PRESENT INCLUDING POTTERY, GLASS, DRESSED STONE AND BRICKS. (A CORKILL). HH100/351/12 29.7.97 HH100/351/12 29.7.97 DIVED IN LISTED POSN. ALL SURVEY DETAILS CORRECT BUT THERE ARE NO NETS. SHOALEST DEPTH IS OVER ENGINE/BOILER. ALSO THERE IS A 12MTR LENGTH OF STERN STILL STANDING UPRIGHT AND PROVIDING THE SAME LEAST DEPTH. SIDES OF WK HAVE COLLAPSED OUTWARDS ONTO THE SEABED WHICH IS COMPOSED OF COARSE SAND AND SHELL. MIDSHIPS COMPLETELY COLLAPSED EXCEPT FOR ENGINE/BOILER STANDING PROUD. BOW COMPLETELY COLLAPSED AND DISAPPEARING INTO THE SEABED. BRICKS, BEER BOTTLES AND PLAIN EARTHWARE BOTTLES FOUND FORWARD OF THE BOILER. LARGE NET DRAPED OVER GUNWHALE ON STBD SIDE. (E JONES, LTR DTD 9.4.01). NCA.
