Cause: built of iron in 1877 by hanna of glasgow. owned at time of loss by ayr steam shipping co. one boiler, compound exansion engine of 60 nhp, single shaft. machinery by d rowan, glasgow. passage llandulais for ardrossan. foundered. (sibi). caught in a severe sea, so much water being shipped that the fires were put out. became waterlogged and was taken in tow by onyx which was in company. the tow parted off st ann's head, the crew took to the boat and the afton went down. (a corkill).

BR STD. 13.9.92 NOT FOUND AND THOUGHT POSSIBLY TO BE THE `AFTON'. (A CORKILL, LTR DTD 13.6.92). HH090/706/01 20.9.96 NOT LOCATED BY DCS3, MAGNETOMETER AND E/S. DELETE. (GARDLINE, HI 706). AMEND ABEY. BR STD. HH100/351/14 14.6.99 DIVED 11.6.99 IN 5405.626N, 0432.230W [WGD] USING DGPS. LEAST DEPTH 19 IN GEN DEPTH 22MTRS. LENGTH 40MTRS, WIDTH 8MTRS. HT 4MTRS. LIES 045/235 DEGS. WELL BROKEN UP WITH TWO MAIN SECTIONS (THE BOILER AND THE COMPOUND ENGINE) STANDING ABOUT 4MTRS. REMAINDER WELL FLATTENED. STERN SECTION MISSING INCLUDING STERN SHAFT AND PROPELLER. BOW AREA LARGELY BROKEN UP AND COVERED IN SANDWAVES. BLOCKS OF THE LIMESTONE CARGO ARE STREWN EVERYWHERE ABOUT THE WRECK. STERN HALF LIES ON AN OUTCROP OF BEDROCK, BOW INTO SHELL GRIT SAND.
