Cause: Ex-armoured cruiser, built 1898. struck by two torpedoes fired by german submarine u-27, while off outer ruytingen, 8m wnw of calais. remained afloat for two hours before sinking. of complement of 450-500, 44 crewmen lost their lives. (dods, ww1sl & naval staff monographs, vol ii).
