Shipwreck details

Name: SCHOKLAND

Length 68.6 meter, tonnage 1113 ton
Load: construction materials,cement,metal: concentrate and products

Cause: struck a rock & sank. (raf laarbruch s.a.c.). built 1915 in rotterdam with triple expansion engine capable of 10knots, schooner rigged with single tall funnel. commandeered by germans armed with 2 anti-aircraft guns, & used for carrying military cargo and troops between st malo and channel islands. at time of loss vessel was carrying 284 troops & 26 crew, and other female passengers including nurses. vessel struck rocks, les grunes vaudin, on leaving st helier. 110 german soldiers lost. WK LIES WITH BOWS APPROX WNW IN AN UPRIGHT POSN WITH LITTLE DAMAGE TO THE HULL APART FROM A DENT IN STERN AND A 15-20FT GAP IN THE STARBOARD FORWARD SECTION, BUT DUE TO GRAVEL THIS CANNOT BE SEEN. ALL THE SUPERSTRUCTURE HAS BEEN DAMAGED AND ONLY MAJOR STRUCTURAL SECTIONS REMAIN [DAVITS, STEEL GIRDERS, FRAMEWORK ETC]. ALL WOOD AND BRIDGE GONE. GERMANS, DURING WW2, REMOVED MATERIAL & GUNS FROM STERN HOLD. FORWARD HOLD STILL CONTAINS CEMENT BAGS STACKED IN ROWS & NO.2 HOLD CONTAINS STEEL GIRDERS. PROP IS IRON. (T A TITTERINGTON, 16.10.69). H3535/71 AMENDED TO WK SW 10.1MTRS. NC 1137. H3635/71 25.2.72 BOUGHT BY T A TITTERINGTON. (LTR, 22.2.72). H5055/75 11.11.75 FIXED IN 490836N, 021039W [EUR] USING DECCA & HSA. WK LIES UPRIGHT WITH LITTLE DAMAGE TO HULL. A 30FT GAP IN STARBOARD SECTION IS BEING SCOURED OUT BY SEA EROSION & EXPOSING INNER DECK STRUCTURES FORWARD. DAVIT & LOWER REGIONS OF BRIDGE SUPERSTRUCTURE STILL INTACT, BUT COLLAPSE ONTO UPPER DECK & HOLDS IF FORCED MANUALLY. STERN SECTION WITH STEEL SCREW INTACT. APPEARS TO BE SLIGHT DAMAGE PORT SIDE AFT BUT NO SPLITTING OF THE MAIN HULL PLATES APPARENT. CEMENT BAGS & STEEL GIRDERS APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN THE CARGO WHEN SUNK. APPROX DEPTH 9FMS AT LW. HULL ROTTING & CAVING IN BETWEEN RIBS. 2ND HOLD ALSO CARRIES BAGGED CEMENT. MAST HANGS OVER PORT SIDE. WHEELHOUSE & SUPERSTRUCTURE COLLAPSED INTO BUNKER SPACE. BEHIND THE 2 BOILERS WRECK HAS BROKEN UP TO REVEAL THE TRIPLE EXPANSION STEAM ENGINE. PROPELLER ALMOST BURIED IN SAND. DRWAING & PHOTOS.
