Shipwreck details

Name: HMS VANGUARD

Length 85.3 meter, width: 16.5 meter, draught: 7.3, tonnage 6034 ton

Cause: built 1870 by cammel laird, birkenhead. compound engines of 5812 nhp, twin shaft. 10 x 9 inch, 4 x 40 pounder & 20 smaller guns. passage kingstown for cork. ran into fog when 6 miles off kingstown and visibility reduced to 50 yards. was next ahead of hms iron duke when helm was put to port to avoid a large sailing vessel. she swung out of line and across the bows of iron duke. iron duke went astern but struck with her ram bow hard on the port quarter. vanguard flooded slowly by the stern and sank in 59 minutes. the captain and officers attended to the safety of the crew and no lives were lost. however they paid little attention to saving the ship. captain dawkins appeared before a court martial and was found guilty, severely repremanded and dismissed the service.
