Cause: built of iron in 1853 by bank-quay foundry ltd. owned at time of loss by pilkington and wilsons's white star line. passage liverpool for melbourne. total of 652 on board, many on passage to the australian goldfields. the vessel was the largest sv built in britian to date. passage liverpool for australia. encountered bad weather with winds ssw to sse force 9 and observations could not be taken. the compasses were inaccurate and the steering defective. the crew was largely of chinese and lascar seamen who were far from satisfactory. found herself off a lee shore at 1130am and dropped both ancors at once. both cables parted at once. the ship was swept onto rocks and was finally washed off to sink in deep water. vessel was uninsured and on her maiden voyage. crew of 71, 581 passengers. 290 lives lost, the numbers lost vary in differing accounts.
