The Valkenburgse Meer ligt ten west of Leiden. The Lake lies sandwiched between Wassenaar, the military airfield Valkenburg, Valkenburg and the A44. The Valkenburgse Meer is created by sand extraction and today the day finds there still always active sand extraction place in the west part of the lake. Het swimming beach located on the southeast side of the Valkenburgse Meer, on the J. Pellenbargweg.

LET OP: Door het onlangs deels wegzakken van de kade, geldt een noodverordening in het gebied rondom het Valkenburgse meer. Het is nog niet bekend wanneer en of het gebied, inclusief de officiële zwemlocatie, opengesteld wordt. Zolang het gebied niet betreden mag worden, wordt het zwemwater ook niet bemonsterd. Er zijn dus geen recente meetgegevens bekend. Overtreding van een noodverordening is op grond van artikel 443 Wetboek van Strafrecht een strafbaar feit, waarop een gevangenisstraf is gesteld van ten hoogste drie maanden of een geldboete van de tweede categorie (€ 4.350,-). The water temperature value comes from the nearest official Rijkswaterstaat measuring station and is an approximation for this location. Always take local conditions into account, it is usually colder in deeper water than on the shore!
 
The water quality measurement is based on the amount of bacteria in nanograms per deciliter (n /dl). In this case it concerns the intestinal bacteria Escherichia coli (E.coli) and intestinal enterococci, which occur in the feces of both animals and humans. A suddenly high value is often related to bird droppings in the water, for example, but can certainly also have other causes. It is unwise to swim in water where these values exceed the standards. The water manager also inspects the bathing water areas for other types of pollution, such as blue-green algae or other toxic algae and general safety features.
