Cause: sunk by crew after being damaged in storm when she was part of a 44 strong french fleet sent to invade ireland in 1796 during napoleonic war. vessel was discovered during clearance ops on tanker "betelgeuse" in 1979, trawlers had recovered copper sheeting in bantry bay over a number of years, & a 16 hundredweight anchor has also previously been recovered leading to suspicion of the wk in bantry bay. 2 of her 40 cannon were recovered in 1987, wreck stated to be in good condition. H4641/74 14.4.80 INVESTIGATED BY IRISH LIGHTS TENDER ATLANTA AND LOCATED ONLY BY FLOATS ON A NET RECENTLY SNAGGED. A GRAPNEL WAS PASSED THROUGH THE AREA WITHOUT LOCATING ANYTHING. (COMMISSIONERS OF I. LIGHTS, 28.3.80). AMEND TO FOUL. BR STD. H4641/74 4.2.85 DESIGNATED AS A NATIONAL MONUMENT.
