The Wijthmenerplas is located near the through road Zwolle-Raalte (N35) on the Zalneweg in a wooded surroundings in the Zwolse hamlet Wijthmen. The lake is used to swim, sunbathing, surfing, diving and fishing and is free accessible. Part of the lake is intended for nude recreation.

The water quality measurement is based on the amount of bacteria in nanograms per deciliter (n /dl). In this case it concerns the intestinal bacteria Escherichia coli (E.coli) and intestinal enterococci, which occur in the feces of both animals and humans.
