Cause: built in 1869 by denton, hartlepool. owned at time of loss by r young. one boiler, triple expansion engine of 98hp, single shaft. passage newcastle-upon-tyne for new york. cargo coal. propeller shaft broke in heavy weather. was taken in tow by a liverpool ss, but the tow parted four times. contact was lost during a snow storm. drifted towards the isle of wight and grounded at 0200. crew recovered.
