Name: VERA (PROBABLY)

Length 55.7 meter, width: 7.6 meter, tonnage 813 ton

Cause: built in 1873 by norddeutsche schiffsbau gesellschaft, keil, germany. owned by the ss vera co ltd, elsinore, denmark. one boiler, compound expansion engine of 100ihp, single shaft. sunk in collision in 1874 with sailing barque hagda. hagda sank quite quickly, vera some 12 hours later. not recorded in lr. (d c wendes).

WRECK APPEARS VERY BROKEN UP WITH NO PARTICULAR ORIENTATION. WRECKAGE EXTENDS OVER AN AREA 40MTRS SQUARE. (HMS BULLDOG, HI 533). CHART AS WK 42MTRS. HH090/962/01 10.12.02 EXAM'D 5.7.02 IN 5023.348N, 0158.156W [WGD] USING DGPS. LEAST E/S DEPTH 40.6 IN GEN DEPTH 44MTRS. NO SCOUR. COVERS AREA OF 45MTRS BY 30MTRS. DCS3 HT 3.4MTRS. MODERATE MAGNETIC ANOMALY. AREA OF BROKEN WRECKAGE. (GARDLINE, HI 962). AMEND TO WK 40MTRS. BR STD. HH100/351/22 25.5.05 NOT CONFIRMED AS THE VERA BUT IS THE RIGHT SIZE, ALTHOUTH THERE IS SOME DOUBT ABOUT THE TONNAGE AS WK APPEARS TO BE ABOUT 400 TONS. THERE WERE DIFFERENCES IN THE RECORDING OF TONNAGES (DWT OR GT). (D C WENDES, EMAIL DTD 24.5.05). NCA.
