Cause: built in 1943 by bath ironworks. express boilers, turbine engines of 60,000bhp for 35.5 knots. was one of the units supporting the landing of the 1st us army on the normandy beaches. was patrolling some 3m off the st marcouf islands when she was struck by glide-bomb launched from german aircraft. was taken in tow, but broke in two and sank. 7 crew lost and 50 wounded or missing.
