Cause: vessel [ex-marlborough], built 1877, by raylton dixon & co., middlesbrough. 2 cylinder compound engine of 168hp, 2 boilers, single shaft. machinery by blair & co. ltd, stockton-on-tees. owned at time of loss by act. 'urd'. on passage from oran, algeria for glasgow. sank following collision with ss 'elk' 1.5m sw by s from little cumbrae lt. sank in 5minutes after being hit amidships. 15 crew safe, 2 crew lost. (clyde shipwrecks, sibi).

TIDAL REDUCTION 8.5FT [NOT APPLIED]. CLEAR SONAR PICTURE GAVE ESTIMATED LENGTH 180FT, WIDTH 45FT. STANDS 16FT ABOVE SEABED. (HMS BILDESTON, WK REPORT DTD 13.9.77). INS AS USC 82MTRS. BR STD. H2885/83 13.5.85 NOT LOCATED DURING BASIC AREA SONAR SEARCH, BUT POSSIBLE SONAR CONTACT MADE 2C TO N OF THIS POSN. NOT FURTHER INVESTIGATED NOR DISPROVED. (HMS BEAGLE, HI 165B).
