Cause: built 1920 by richardson, duck & co., thornaby. owned at time of loss by r chapman & son, newcastle-upon-tyne. passage narvik for middlesbrough not in convoy. torpedoed & sunk by german submarine u 23. vessel sank in 30 seconds with loss of all 34 crew. photo supplied. (k heath)

HH091/137/01 - SEP 2009/000003219 24.12.08 EXAM'D 11.8.08 IN 5853.8302N, 0150.6118W [WGD] USING DGPS. LEAST M/B DEPTH 81.67 IN GEN DEPTH 91.1MTRS. SCOUR 2.2MTRS DEEP AROUND BOW. LENGTH 116MTRS, WIDTH 25MTRS, HT 11.7MTRS. LIES 106/286DEGS WITH BOWS WNW. INTACT, COLLAPSED. DEBRIS CLOSE TO WK. LIMITED DETAIL DUE TO DEPTH. (NETSURVEY, HI 1137). AMEND WK 81MTRS IN REVISED POSN. BR STD. 13.5.09 BANCREST NOW BELIEVED TO PROBABLY BE THE WRECK LOCATED IN 58547.44N, 0200.902W [SEE 72964]. RESEARCH WOULD SHOW THAT THIS WK IS POSSIBLY SS TIBERTON. CINC REQUESTED UNTIL IDENTITY CAN BE CONFIRMED. (K HEATH, TELECON 11.5.09 & E-MAILS 12.5.09 & 13.5.09) AMENDED TO TIBERTON (POSSIBLY). NCA. 17.8.10 DIVED 16.8.10, FOUND TO BE A LARGE VESSEL WITH TONS OF IRON ORE SCATTERED AROUND. CONFIRMS IDENTITY AS TIBERTON. CINC TO REMAIN AT PRESENT UNTIL RELATIVES INFORMED. (K HEATH, E-MAIL DTD 16.8.10) IDENTITY AMENDED TO TIBERTON. NCA.
