Cause: built 1958 by doken werf mij. wilton fijenoord, n.v., schiedam. owned at time of loss by cia de nav., cruz del sol, s.a. on passage wilhelmshaven for civitavecchia, italy. broke in two during rough weather near ile de batz. bow eventually sank, causing major pollution of normandy. stern towed to le havre, sold to spanish shipbreakers and towed to santander to be scrapped. 8 of 39 crew lost.
