Shipwreck details

Name: SOMALI

Length 139.9 meter, width: 18.6 meter, draught: 9.1, tonnage 6809 ton
Load: general and mixed goods

Cause: built by harland & wolff on the clyde in 1930. owned at time of loss by the peninsular & orient steam navigation co. five boilers, single quadruple expansion engine, single screw. damaged during air attack by german aircraft and caught fire. sank the following day while under tow and after an explosion. was on passage london to hong kong with 9000 tons general cargo.

H1254/41 12.12.41 MARKED BY G CONL BUOY LAID 070DEG, 2C FROM WK. WK NO LONGER VISIBLE. CONSIDERABLE SURFACE DISTURBANCE SEEN IN POSN. (TH).

- NM 2964/41. H1254/41 6.10.43 WK LOCATED IN 553356N, 013624W, OR 150.5DEG, 3.24M FROM FARNE LT. CHAIN SWEPT CLEAR AT 8FMS. LEAST E/S DEPTH 9FMS. BUOY WITHDRAWN. (THV BEACON, 27.7.43).

- NM 2091/43. H1254/41 2.6.60 NOW CHARTED IN 553356N, 013624W. (TH, 1943). BR STD. 14.9.67 HULL OWNED BY MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT. CARGO HAS BEEN PARTLY SALVAGED. (MOT, TELECON). 28.5.82 DESCRIBED AS UPRIGHT. MOST OF HULL COMPLETE, STANDING 9MTRS HIGH IN GEN DEPTH 28-30MTRS. REPD SOLD TO OCEAN DIVING SERVICES AND NOVOCASTRIAN DIVING SALVAGE CO. (BSAC WK REGISTER). NCA. HH242/350/01 10.4.91 VALUABLE ROV LOST ON THIS WK WHILE SALVAGE OPS BEING CARRIED OUT IN MAR 1991. (LL, 26.3.91). HH242/640/02 14.6.96 LOCATED IN 553408N, 013600W [OGB]. WK HAS COLLAPSED & IS LEVEL WITH THE SEABED WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE BOILERS & ENGINES WHICH STAND PROUD. (ECHOSCAN, TELECON DTD 14.6.96). AMEND POSN.

- NM 2281/96. HH351/100/15 20.9.99 MUCH SALVAGE WORK HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT ON THE WK. NOW WK IS FLATTENED AND SCATTERED, THE THE HIGHEST PART IS AT ABOUT 3MTRS. BOW SECTION SUPPOSED TO BE CLOSE BY. LIES 163/343 DEGS. MODERATE MAGNETIC ANOMALY. SEABED ROCK. WELL BROKEN WRECK WITH LARGE DEBRIS FIELD EXTENDING 85MTRS TOWARDS 254 DEGS. E/S INVESTIGATION NOT COMPLETED AND NOT SWEPT DUE TO BUOYS.
