Cause: built in 1877 by c s swan & co, newcastle-upon-tyne. owned at time of loss by nelson, donkin & co. , newcastle. one boiler, compound expansion engine of 150nhp, single shaft. machinery by t clarke & co, newcastle. passage fiume for leith. foundered in ne force 10 and heavy weather. (sibi).

Details measurements/cartography: HH090/915/01 11.1.02 EXAM'D 25.7.01 IN 5543.212N, 0151.190W [WGD] USING DGPS. LEAST E/S DEPTH 12.9 IN GEN DEPTH 14.5MTRS. NO SCOUR. LENGTH 31MTRS, WIDTH 7MTRS. DCS3 HT 1.8MTRS. LIES 073/253DEGS WITH BOWS WSW. DEBRIS EXTENDS 19MTRS TOWARDS 073DEGS. STRONG MAGNETIC ANOMALY. BROKEN, BURIED, UPRIGHT. (GARDLINE, HI 915). BR STD. HH100/351/20 1.7.03 DIVED IN LISTED POSN. THIS IS A VERY OLD PADDLE STEAMER OF ABOUT 600-700 TONS. UPRIGHT AND MOSTLY BURIED. PORT SIDE OF HULL COLLAPSED INWARDS AND THE STBD SIDE COLLAPSED OUTWARDS. SINGLE BOILER ON ITS SIDE BUT TOTALLY COLLAPSED. ENGINE LIES ON ITS SIDE WITH IRON/STEEL SHAFTS RUNNING OUT TO WHERE THE PADDLES WERE. LOTS OF COPPER PIPING STREWN AROUND BUT NO BRONZE/BRASS VALVES, SO MAY HAVE BEEN SALVAGED. (R YOUNG, EMAIL DTD 30.6.03). NCA. HH100/351/20 11.7.03 HAS BEEN DIVED AGAIN. THERE ARE TWO BOILERS BUT ONE IS IN PIECES AS IF IT HAD EXPLODED. A STEEL OR IRON PROP ALSO LOCATED. THIS MUST HAVE BEEN CARGO AS THE VESSEL IS DEFINITELY A PADDLER WITH ONE ENGINE. (R YOUNG, EMAIL DTD 11.7.03). NCA. HH100/351/20 16.7.03 HAS BEEN DIVED AGAIN. APPEARS TO HAVE A SHAFT DISAPPEARING INTO THE SAND AT THE STERN, WITH BEARING BLOCKS ON THE SHAFT. THUS IT NOW APPEARS TO BE A SHAFT DRIVEN VESSEL. PROP ON DECK IS FOUR-BLADED AND A VERY OLD TYPE. STEERING BINNACLE HAD THREE BEAUTIFUL BRONZE DOLPHINS IN AN ARCHED POSITION SUPPORTING IT. THUS CONSIDERED TO BE A PRIVATE YACHT RATHER THAN AN ORDINARY VESSEL. (R YOUNG, EMAIL DTD 16.7.03). NCA. HH100/351/20 8.9.03 HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED BY RECOVERED BELL, MARKED: 'SHADWAN 1877'. (R YOUNG, EMAIL DTD 24.8.03). NCA. 25.2.05 HIGHEST POINT IS BOILER RISING ONLY 1.5MTRS FROM SEABED, NEARBY ROCK RIDGES STAND HIGHER. PROPELLER LIES OFF TO PORT SIDE OF STERN. (DIVER MAGAZINE FEB'05) SEP 2021/000090526 1.4.21 EXAM'D 9.4.20 IN 5543.214N, 0151.185W [WGD]. LEAST M/B DEPTH 13.18MTRS IN GEN DEPTH 15MTRS, LENGTH 31MTRS, WIDTH 12MTRS, HT 1.8MTRS, ORIENTATION 227/047 DEGS. WK URPRIGHT AND PARTIALLY BURIED AT MID-SECTION. (MERITAITO, HI1591). AMEND DW 13.1MTRS IN REVISED POSN.
