Name: SERRANA (BOW SECTION)

Length 107.6 meter, width: 14.6 meter, draught: 4.6, tonnage 3677 ton
Load: general and mixed goods

Cause: vessel, built in 1905 by j redhead & sons & owned at the time of loss by scrutton & sons, was torpedoed & sunk by german s/m ub 35 when 10m w of s catherines point whilst en route from london to w. indies. eventually sank on the bridge of needles in two halves. 5 lives lost, the captain was among the survivors. (ww1sl, dods & der krieg zur see).

HT ABOVE SEABED MOSTLY 5 TO 8FT, BUT PARTS RISING TO 12FT, IN GEN DEPTHS 30-35FT [NOT REDUCED]. THOUGHT TO BE WW1 WK FROM CONDITION AND PROBABLY BOWS OF SERRANA. LOCATED BY MAGNETOMETER & FIXED BY SEXTANT. ALSO TRANSIT RH SIDE OF NEEDLES LTHO WITH PEAK OF NEEDLES. DIFFICULT TO LOCATE WITH E/S. (M WALSH, 2.9.76). H1720/65 23.9.76 INS DW PA IN 503936N, 013606W [OGB].

MAX HT 15FT. A PIECE OF GIRDER WHICH STANDS VERTICAL NEAR BOWS. HOLDS VERY SILTED & CARGO APPEARS TO BE BRICKS, RAILWAY LINES & WAGON WHEELS. (M WALSH 20.8.78).H1720/65 6.11.78 INS WK 7.6MTRS IN 503937N, 013606W [OGB]. NM 1951(T)/76 CANCELLED. BR STD. H2356/84 21.9.87 EXAM'D 30.7.86 IN 503935N, 013605.5W [OGB] USING TRISPONDER [4 LOP]. LEAST E/S DEPTH 4.8 IN GEN DEPTH 8.1 TO 8.5MTRS. NO SCOUR. LIES ON ROCKY LEDGE AND IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO LOCATE DUE TO OVERFALLS. BEST EXAM'D AT SLACK WATER. RUNNING TRANSIT RIGHT SIDE NEEDLES LT HO WITH PEAK OF THE NEEDLES. (HMSML GLEANER, HI 266).

(HMSML GLEANER, HI 365). HH090/699/01 7.11.97 NOT LOCATED IN VICINITY OF CHARTED POSN. (NP 1016, HI 699). NCA. HH090/858/01 7.9.99 EXAM'D 12.8.99 IN 5039.620N, 0136.166W [WGD] USING DGPS. SWEPT CLEAR 5.2, FOUL 5.4MTRS. LEAST E/S DEPTH 5.5 IN GEN DEPTH 9MTRS. NO SCOUR. NO DCS3 DIMENSIONS. MODERATE MAGNETIC ANOMALY. DIFFICULT TO LOCATE WITH DCS3 AND E/S. VERY NARROW E/S RETURN FOUND CLOSE TO THE LISTED POSN WHICH SUPPORTS THE PREVIOUS REPORT OF A GIRDER STANDING CLOSE TO THE BOWS. (NP 1016, HI 858). AMEND TO SW 5.2MTRS IN REVISED POSN. BR STD.
