Cause: 13.5.69 wrecked on retarrier ledges. bound for plymouth, cherbourg and hamburg from new york. 254 passengers. 314 lives lost. (r edmonds, report 13.5.69, isles of scilly museum publication no.3). vessel, built in 1873 by r napier & sons and owned at the time of loss by german transatlantic steam nav. co., was wrecked on retarrier ledges whilst en route from new york to hamburg. MR COWANS DIVERS REPORT WRECK TO BE VERY BROKEN UP AND SCATTERED OVER WIDE AREA, KEEL & BOTTOM PLATES STILL RECOGNISABLE BUT RISE ONLY A FOOT OR SO ABOVE SEABED. POPULAR WK FOR DIVERS. (HMS HECATE, ROS DTD 16.7.73). NCA. POSN 495210N, 062540W FOR FILING ONLY. 20.4.82 20.4.82 FLATTENED AND UNDER WEED. KEEL AND BOTTOM PLATES RECOGNISABLE.
