Name: Sarpfos

Cause: believed to have been sunk after being attacked by aircraft and later by several ships. built 1910 by nylands vaerkstyed, christiana. owned at time of loss by akties, manchester. screw, triple-expansion engines, 152hp. passage swansea for odde. torpedoed and sunk by u-105. (sibi).positional analysis: the wreck lies 5.5nm to the se of the position given in war losses (1990) and in the ktb of u105. the wreck is known to havedrifted for over an hour after initially being hit (ktb). wind was from the nw, so the wreck would be expected to have drifted se.dimensional analysis: sarpfos was 77.54m x 11.93m (lloyd's register 1916-17). this is consistent with the dimensions ofthis wreck site.archival analysis: u105's ktb states the ship was hit twice, with a gap of 40 minutes between shots. it drifted for 60 minutes before sinking. themaster's account shows the ship was initially hit port side by engine room and the ship was abandoned. the crew escaped into an sv which made off. it was not seen to sink. cargo was coal (tna adm 137/1514).

(HMS RUNNYMEDE, C IN C WA). H4827/75 25.1.77 AREA WITHIN 1 MILE OF THIS 1945 SONAR CONTACT WAS SEARCHED. H4466/81 11.4.84 WK LOCATED & EXAM'D 11.11.83 IN 534221N, 045654W [OGB] USING HIFIX/6 [2 LOP]. LEAST E/S DEPTH 44 IN GEN DEPTH 51MTRS. NO SCOUR. DCS3 HT 8MTRS, LENGTH 60MTRS, WIDTH 8MTRS. INTACT, LYING 080/260 DEG. GOOD SONAR CONTACT. POSSIBLY A SUBMARINE. (HMS BEAGLE HI 95). BR STD. HH100/351/12 5.12.96 THOUGHT TO BE THE WRECK OF U 325. (S KERSHAW, LTR DTD 19.11.96). NCA. 19.5.00 DIVED IN LISTED POSN. ROUNDED SHAPE. COULD BE A SUBMARINE. (J SHAW, TELECON 19.5.00). NCA. HH100/351/22 21.2.06 RE-ASSESSED IN 2004. NOW BELEIVED TO BE U 242, AS U 325 LOCATED IN 5039.789N, 0505.068W [EUT] [SEE 60228]. (I MC CARTNEY VISIT 21.2.06) NCA. 1.3.23 WRECK SURVEYED 14/5/2019: MBES DATA SHOWS SS COASTER, LENGTH 75MTRS, WIDTH 13MTRS, TWIN BOILERS AND A SINGLE ENGINE, BOWS EAST. POSITIONALLY, DIMENSIONALLY AND ARCHIVALLY THIS WRECK IS MOST LIKEL TO BE "SARPFOS". THE WK IS NOT A U-BOAT. (INNES MCCARTNEY BOOK "ECHOES FROM THE DEEP"). UPDATE "SARPFOS" AND ATTRIBUTES.
