Shipwreck details

Name: RESURGAM

Length 12.5 meter, width: 3 meter, draught: 3.7, tonnage 30 ton

Cause: 10.12.1879 left birkenhead for portsmouth 10.12.1879. put into foryd harbour, rhyl, for several experiments. when the 3 man crew returned in the morning, the submarine had disappeared. thought to have drifted from mooring & sank. (shipwrecks of n.wales, i.w. jones). 25.2.1880 sailed from rhyl on 25.2.1880 with escort launch elphin. developed engine trouble and was taken in tow. tow-line snapped in severe gale and submarine sank. (safety at sea, no.133, apr '80, p.55). designed by the merseyside engineer, rev. george garret. first dived in 1879 but sank in rough weather four years later. (nautical magazine, jan '97). built by cochran & company, birkenhead with 2 cylinder compound engine, single shaft. owned at time of loss by garrett sub. nav & pneunataphore co. (sibi)

(SHIPWRECKS OF N WALES, I W JONES). HH210/350/01 11.5.89 REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN LOCATED AND SALVAGE OPS BEING PLANNED. (DAILY TELEGRAPH, 16.4.89). 25.4.89 REPORTED TO LIE IN W END OF COLWYN BAY SOME 5050FT FROM LAND. (CDR COMPTON-HALL, SUBMARINE MUSEUM, GOSPORT, TELECON). AMEND FILING POSN TO 531830N, 034300W. HH100/351/01 10.7.89 CURRENT SEARCH FOR WK UNSUCCESSFUL. (K HURLEY, 4.7.89). 12.2.96 REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN FOUND OFF RHYL WHEN IT SNAGGED FISHING NETS. REQUEST TO K HURLEY TO CLEAR THEM RESULTED IN ITS IDENTIFICATION. (DAILY MAIL, 16.12.95). 29.3.96 FINDERS WILL NOT RELEASE POSN TO ARCHEOLOGICAL DIVING UNIT. LONGITUDE KNOWN TO BE IN THE REGION OF 033330W. (M DEAN, ARCHEOLOGICAL DIVING UNIT, TELECON). HH212/400/09 28.6.96 WK LIES IN 532343N, 033315.0W [OGB], IN AREA KNOWN AS 'RHYL STONES'. HT 9FT. NO SCOUR. LIES BOWS W. STILL HAS SOME OF ORIGINAL WOOD CLADDING IN PLACE. HATCH MISSING AND CONNING TOWER DENTED. POSN NOW WIDELY KNOWN AND BEING DIVED REGULARLY. (K HURLEY). SHE HAS SWIVELLED THROUGH 090DEGS AND SHIFTED BODILY 9MTRS FROM PREVIOUS POSN. WOODEN HULL CLADDING HAS GONE. CHANGES DUE TO RECENT HEAVY WEATHER. DCS3 HT 1.2MTRS. LIES 010/190DEGS. NO DEBRIS. BELIEVED TO BE UPRIGHT BUT CYLINDRICAL DESIGN MAKES ESTIMATION OF ATTITUDE DIFFICULT. WK WAS MOVED DURING NIGHT OF 9/10.6.1999 SOME 140MTRS SSW FROM ITS CHARTED POSN. RELOCATED BY POLICE DIVERS ON 11.6.99. SCOUR EXTENDS 20MTRS TOWARDS 010DEGS, BUT WAS PROBABLY CAUSED BY THE MOVEMENT OF THE WK. (HMSML GLEANER, HI 759). AMEND TO WK 8.5MTRS IN REVISED POSN.
