Cause: built in 1947 by denny, williams & bros ltd, dumbarton. owned at time of loss by british transport commission. twin 7 cylinder oil engines of 874bhp, twin shaft. passage stranraer for larne. two hours after sailing reported to be hove to and not under command off lough ryan. before help could arrive stern doors to car deck were stove in by heavy seas in a full northerly gale, causing major flooding and 35 deg list to stbd. eventually capsized and sank. final mayday give incorrect posn and could not be located by hms contest, while rockets fired reached insufficient height to be seen. 134 passengers & crew lost. (sibi).
