Length 92 meter, width: 13.4 meter, tonnage 1759 ton
Cause: built in 1944 by deutsche werft a.g. as 'fangturm'. later renamed 'empire gallop' following internment during ww2. later returned to german ownership and renamed. 'palmyra' owned at the time of loss by bock, godeffroy & co. passage hamburg for istanbul. sank after a collision with the `british mariner' about 20m off ushant. (r v martin, dods).

(FRENCH WK RECORDS 1987, NO.14585168). INS AS NDW. BR STD. HH100/351/09 1.3.95 WK STATED AS BEING THE GERMAN SS 'PALMYRA'. THE VESSEL WAS BUILT AS THE 'FANGTURM' AND LATER RENAMED 'EMPIRE GALLOP' WHEN IT WAS INTERNED DURING WW11. AFTERWARDS IT WAS RETURNED TO THE GERMANS AND RENAMED 'PALMYRA'. IDENTIFIED BY BELL BEARING NAME 'EMPIRE GALLOP'. (R V MARTIN 27.2.95 & THE EMPIRE SHIPS).
