- NM 2699/87. H3838/86 29.3.88 H3838/86 29.3.88 EXAM'D 29.9.87 BY HMS BULLDOG WITH HYDROSEARCH USING HIFIX/6 & TRISPONDER. LEAST E/S DEPTH 38.8 IN GEN DEPTH 44MTRS. NO SCOUR. DCS3 HT 6.2MTRS; HYDROSEARCH VERTICAL HT 4.3MTRS; SHADOW HT 4.0MTRS. APPEARS AS A HEAP OF WRECKAGE LYING 135/315 DEG. LENGTH 32.5MTRS, BEAM 11MTRS. CHART AS WK 38MTRS. (HMS FAWN, HI 357). NFA. H100/351/01 23.11.89 H100/351/01 23.11.89 DIVED ON AND FOUND TO BE REMAINS OF OLD SV WITH VERY LITTLE OF TIMBERS LEFT EXCEPT FOR PORTIONS OF HULL PROTRUDING FROM SEABED. CONFIRMED TO BE BASICALLY A HEAP OF WRECKAGE MADE UP OF POTTERY, EARTHENWARE, BOTTLES AND LARGE JARS ALL IN A JUMBLE AND SLOWLY SPILLING OUT ONTO SURROUNDING SEABED. IN STERN AREA, A LARGE NUMBER OF COPPER DISCS, MARKED 'NEWTON KEATES & CO. LIVERPOOL' HAVE BEEN FOUND AND ALSO ROLLS OF LEAD TUBING. INDICATIONS ARE OF A FULLY LADEN SV OUTWARD BOUND FROM LIVERPOOL AND THOUGHT POSSIBLY TO BE THE 'GOVERNOR FENNER', AN EMIGRANT SHIP WHICH SANK 20.2.1841 AFTER A COLLISION WITH PADDLE STEAMER 'NOTTINGHAM'. REASONS STATED IN LETTER. (K HURLEY, 23.10.89). US SV 'GOVERNOR FENNER' SANK ON 20.2.1841 AFTER A COLLISION IN THICK FOG 15M WEST OF HOLYHEAD. (DOD). 7.10.91 7.10.91 WK HAS BEEN PURCHASED FROM AMERICAN INSURERS AS THE 'PACIFIC' WHICH SANK IN 1857. OWNERSHIP HAS BEEN SUBJECT OF AN ENQUIRY BY DEPT OF TRANSPORT. WK IS EASILY FOUND USING HMS FAWN'S DECCA COORDS BUT NOT WHEN SEARCHING USING GPS ON LAT & LONG. ONLY PART OF VESSEL BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN LOCATED. (P DAY, TELECON). HH100/351/08 9.6.94 HH100/351/08 9.6.94 BRASS PLATES RECOVERED FROM WRECK MARKED 'J & J WHITEHOUSE' VICTORIA, TIPTON; PATENTED 15.9.65 SUGGEST WK CANNOT BE THAT OF THE `PACIFIC' WHICH SANK IN 1856. HH100/351/12 16.12.96 HH100/351/12 16.12.96 WK REPD TO BE VIRTUALLY LEVEL WITH THE SURROUNDING SEABED AND THOUGHT UNLIKELY TO BE THE 'PACIFIC' AS CAST IRON 'IRONS' RECOVERED WERE DATED 1863. (S.KERSHAW). NCA.
