Cause: ex-pieter de coninck. renamed norge in 1889. built of iron in 1881 by a stephen & co, glasgow. owned at time of loss by det forenede d/s (scandinavian american line). compound inverted engine of 346hp for 11.5 knots. passage copenhagen for new york with 700 emigrants and crew of about 80. ran aground on rocks at rockall. vessel was badly holed & sank soon after with great loss of life, only 129 being saved. (dods) of 759 people on board, mostly scandinavian and russian-jewish emigrants, 635 were lost. vessel which was licensed to carry 800 only had lifeboats for 251.
