Shipwreck details

Name: MURREE

Length 152 meter, width: 22.9 meter, draught: 9.5, tonnage 11941 ton
Load: containers,chemicals,general and mixed goods

Cause: vessel, built 1981 by austin & pickersgill ltd. owned at time of loss by the pakistan national shipping corporation. began to take in water in for'd hold when cargo shifted during storm force winds. some containers were lost overboard. all 40 crew were rescued by three royal navy helicopters. vessel sank shortly after last person was winched to safety. some of the chemical cargo washed ashore along the s coast of england causing a hazard to beachcombers. (msd). forward hold flooded as result of one of the containers washed overboard which was still attached to the ship by a hawser swung back into ship's side splitting plates. GOOD E/S TRACE INDICATES LEAST DEPTH OF 25MTRS [LAT], BUT FAINT TRACE INDICATES A SHOALER DEPTH OF 17MTRS POSSIBLY DUE TO TURBULENCE. NOT SWEPT. TWO MOORING ROPES SIGHTED ON SURFACE. (THV 'PATRICIA', DTD 31.10.89). WK MARKED BY E CARD LT BUOY, [Q(3)10S RACON (D)]; W CARD LT BUOY, [Q(9)15S]; N CARD LT BUOY, [Q]; AND S CARD LT BUOY, [Q(6)+LFL15S]. ALL LAID ABOUT 370MTRS FROM WK. (TH NM 35/89 & NM 36/89). CHART AS WK 17MTRS WITH BUOYS.

- NM 3621/89. HH226/350/01 30.1.90 EXAM'D 31.12.89 IN CHARTED POSN USING HYPERFIX. CHAIN SWEPT CLEAR AT 18.2, FOUL AT 18.8MTRS. LEAST E/S DEPTH 18.3 IN GEN DEPTH 64MTRS. NO SCOUR. BUOYS CORRECTLY ON STATION. (THV 'MERMAID', H525 DTD 31.12 89 & CHAIN SWEEP REPORT). UP TO 100 BARRELS OF CHEMICALS, THOUGHT TO BE FROM THIS WRECK, HAVE BEEN WASHED ASHORE ON ISLE OF WIGHT. (LLOYDS VOL.278). BR STD. HH100/351/01 29.6.90 DIVED ON 13.5.90 IN 495754N, 031412W USING DECCA. LIES UPRIGHT AND APPARENTLY ORIENTATED NNE/SSW. AT 1346, BST, MINIMUM DEPTH TO TOP OF BRIDGE WAS 32MTRS; TOP OF MAST BEING LESS THAN 25MTRS. (M ROWLEY, 17.5.90). NCA. HH226/350/01 4.9.90 RACON DISCONTINUED ON OR ABOUT 21.8.90. (TH NM 25/90).
