Cause: ex-standard. built in 1890 by armstrong mitchell & co. owned at time of loss by standard oil co, new york. two boilers, triple expansion engine of 225 nhp, single shaft. machinery by wallsend slipway co ltd, newcastle-upon-tyne. passage new york for portsmouth. 2 x 3 inch guns. torpedoed and sank at once by the stern. remained afloat with stern on the seabed in 34fms. eventually sunk by explosive charges as was a danger to shipping. BOWS ARE BROKEN AND THE STEM LIES ON THE PORT SIDE CLOSE TO A LARGE ANCHOR. CHAIN LOCKER IS EXPOSED. INTACT MIDSHIPS AND STANDS 10MTRS HIGH. DECK IS STEEL AND SHOWS FEW FEATURES UNTIL THE ENGINE ROOM SKYLIGHT IS SEEN. BELOW THIS IS A LARGE TRIPLE EXPANSION ENGINE, ACCESSIBLE FROM THE AFTER END. BEYOND THE ENGINE THE WK DROPS AWAY TO A DEBRIS FIELD. CONSIDERED TO BE MOTANO (PROBABLY). (N R CHIPCHASE). NCA.
