Cause: thought to have foundered in bad weather while on passage to brittany. vessel is a 70ton, 60ft, 7-9 cannon pinnace [small vessel with sails and oars, sometimes used as a man-of-war's tender boat]. sank whilst on passage to brittany with suppiles for elizabeth i's army, who were fighting the spanish. MANY ARTIFACTS RECOVERED. SITE HAS BEEN GIVEN OFFICIAL PROTECTION. (THE INDEPENDENT, 26.6.92). REPD TO HAVE BEEN FOUND NEAR 'THE LEDGE'. NCA YET. HH256/440/02 10.2.94 HISTORIC ELIZABETHAN WRECK, WITH RESTRICTED AREA RADIUS 200MTRS CENTRED IN 494417.5N, 020951.5W [EUR]. NOTE, THE SITE IS PROTECTED FROM UNAUTHORISED INTERFERENCE. (ALDERNEY HARBOUR OFFICE, HN DTD 2.2.94).
- NM 727/94. [NB, NOT REFERRED TO IN ANM 16]. 1.8.94 1.8.94 REPORT THAT DIVERS ARE TO ATTEMPT TO LIFT A CANNON FROM AN ELIZABETHAN MAN-OF-WAR OFF ALDERNEY. SMALL ARMS AND A 1586 MEDALLION HAVE ALREADY BEEN RECOVERED FROM THE WRECK. (THE TIMES, 11.7.94). NCA. 24.8.94 REPORT THAT CANNON HAS NOW BEEN SUCCESSFULLY LIFTED. VESSEL IS BELIEVED TO BE THE 'MAKESHIFT', A 60FT PINNACE WHICH SANK ABOUT 0.5M OFF ALDERNEY IN 1592. THE HULL IS REPORTED TO BE UNDER SEVERAL FEET OF SAND. ANOTHER EXPLORATION IS PLANNED IN 1995. (THE GUARDIAN 22.7.94). NCA. 17.11.94 SIXTEENTH CENTURY CANNON HAS BEEN RECOVERED AND WAS LANDED AT ST ANNE'S HARBOUR. BELIEVED TO BE MANY ARTIFACTS UNDER THE SAND. ALREADY RECOVERED ARE 1000 ITEMS AND 12 'APOSTLES' [SMALL BRASS CONTAINERS FOR CHARGES OF POWDER, SO CALLED AS 12 WERE CARRIED IN A BANDOLIER].
