Cause: built by w c miller & sons, ltd of liverpool in 1864. iron paddle steamer. compound diagonal engines, 4 boilers, 300 nhp. cargo of 700 tons of coal. passage liverpool for bermuda. vessel was cutter rigged. sailed in very heavy weather. anchor penetrated the deck and scuttle cover washed away. the vessel ceased answering the helm, slowed and heavy seas washed away the forward hatch covers. drifted helplessly before the wind and later sank. only 12 men survived. FF REPORTED IN 1991, FIRST LOCATED IN 1992 AND FIRST DIVED IN JUNE 1992 BUT NOT INVESTIGATED DUE TO VERY POOR UNDERWATER VISIBILITY. DIVED AND FOUND TO BE REMAINS OF A LARGE PADDLE STEAMER WITH THE BOW LYING TO THE NW, STERN SE. THE AREA OF THE BOW AND STERN PROVIDE NO SIGNIFICANT HEIGHT AND ARE FULL OF MUD AND SAND. THE ENGINES AND BOILERS STAND SOME 5MTRS HIGH. THE LEAST DEPTH IS FROM THE STBD PADDLE WHEEL STANDING 6MTRS IN GEN DEPTH OF 17MTRS. THIS AREA OF WRECKAGE IS 30MTRS LONG BY 14MTRS WIDE. THERE IS A SMALL AMOUNT OF WRECKAGE CLOSE TO THE HULL ON EITHER SIDE OF THE ENGINE. NO POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION MADE UNTIL THE RECOVERY OF THE BELL IN EARLY 1997. BELL INSCRIBED 'LELIA 1864'. - NM 264/98. HH100/351/14 12.3.99 CONFIRMED AS THE WRECK OF A PADDLE STEAMER. ALMOST UPRIGHT AND IN ONE PIECE BUT COLLAPSED INWARDS WITH A PADDLE OF APPROX 20FT DIAMETER ON THE STBD SIDE. (A PARRY, LTR DTD 8.3.99).
