Cause: built in 1912 by swan, hunter & wigham richardson, newcastle-upon-tyne. onwed at time of loss by the cunard ss co ltd. six boilers, twin quadruple expansion engines of 2170nhp, twin shaft. passage new york for liverpool. torpedoed and sunk by u-50. cargo included 852 silver ingots, 132 boxes of fine silver, 4,545,738 lbs of empty brass shell cases, 3000 tons of steel, 2843 bales of cotton and 5400 sacks of mail. 6 crew and six passengers lost. HOWEVER FISHERMAN REPORTS FASTENER IN 520400N, 134100W IN GEN DEPTH 431MTRS. (SWIRE PACIFIC OFFSHORE, TELEX 1.7.86). 18.7.86 LACONIA FOUND. IDENTIFIED BY RECOVERED COPPER-BOTTOMED BAKING POT BEARING NAME. POSN NOT YET AVAILABLE. (J THOROGOOD, SWIRE PACIFIC OFFSHORE, TELECON 18.7.86).
