Cause: built in 1937 by a g weser. originally owned by north german lloyd. oil engines for 19 knots. six 5.9 inch, 7 smaller guns. 4 torpedo tubes, 1 aircraft. convered to commerce raider at the start of ww2. while escorted by four mtbs and some minesweepers ran into hunting group of five destroyers and several torpedo boats. after a short action was ovewhelmed by gunfire, blew up and sank. two torpedo boats and a minesweeper were also sunk. - NM 3470/02. 4.1.08 LIES IN TWO PARTS. MAIN SECTION DIVED 22.7.07 IN 4945.314N, 0155.925W TO 0155.975W [WGD]. APPEARS TO BE ABOUT 90MTRS LONG AND IS INVERTED. STANDS 15MTRS HIGH BY E/S AND DIVER. COMPLETE FROM THE STERN TO JUST FWD OF THE BRIDGE AND AFT OF THE FWD GUNS. CLEAR EVIDENCE OF REMOVABLE GUN COVERS AND SOME OF THE GUNS ARE VISIBLE. NAZI ITEMS SUCH AS PLATES WERE REPORTED WITH THE SWASTICA AND KREIGSMARINE EMBLEMS CLEARLY MARKED UPON THEM. BOW SECTION DIVED 24.7.07 IN 4945.241N, 0155.640 W TO 0155.652W [WGD]. A LITTLE LESS THAN 25MTRS LONG, BADLY DAMAGED AND APPEARS TO BE STANDING WITH THE BOW POINTING UPWARDS AND TOWARDS THE EAST. STANDS 14MTRS HIGH. THE DISTANCE FROM THE MAIN SECTION AND THE EXTENSIVE DAMAGE SUPPORTS THE REPORT OF AN EXPLOSION PRIOR TO SINKING. NO EVIDENCE OF THE FWD HOLD OR FWD GUN FOUND. ODD PIECES OF DEBRIS LOCATED BY E/S BETWEEN THE MAIN PARTS, BUT NONE OF SIGNIFICANCE. NO EVIDENCE FOUND OF TWO TORPEDO BOATS AND MINESWEEPER SUNK IN THIS ACTION. CINC REQUESTED FOR WHOLE REPORT.
