Name: JOSHUA NICHOLSON

Length 82.3 meter, width: 10.7 meter, draught: 7.6, tonnage 1853 ton
Load: armament,railway: stock and construction materials,non-ferrous elements and ores: unrefined and refined,metal: concentrate and products

Cause: torpedoed and sunk by a german submarine whilst on passage london to alexandria. vessel, bult 1880 by tyne iron steamboat co. with 3 cylinder triple expansion engine, 2 boilers. owned at time of loss by joshua nicholson steam boat co.26 lives lost. (ll ww1, ww1sl, shipwreck index of british isles)

Details measurements/cartography: HH100/351/14 13.11.98 DIVED IN 500120N, 054014W [OGB] USING GPS. VERY SCATTERED OVER A LARGE REEF. MAIN PART OF WRECKAGE CONSISTS OF TWO BOILERS AND A MOUND OF UNIDENTIFIABLE FERROUS WRECKAGE, IN AMONGST WHICH ARE MANY HUNDREDS OF LIVE 75MM AND 105MM SHELLS AND MANY LARGER (APPROX 250MM) SHELLS. THE AMMUNITION IS OF FRENCH MANUFACTURE AND ALL IS DATED 1916. COMPLETE FIELD GUNS AND CARRIAGES LIE AMONGST THE WRECKAGE. KNOWN LOCALLY AS THE 'JOSHUA NICHOLSON' ALTHOUGH THIS WAS THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN SUNK OFF THE WOLF ROCK (SEE DEAD RECORD 22559). (G J LOCKETT, 11.11.98). INS AS NDW. BR STD. HH100/351/18 27.2.02 JOSHUA NICHOLSON IN 5001.783N, 0540.166W [WGD]. USED TO BE PILED HIGH WITH 1917 DATED SHELLCASES. HEAVILY BROKEN SPREAD OVER THE REEF IN GEN DEPTH 19MTRS. (J ROSEVEARE, EMAIL DTD 20.2.02). BA 2345 PLAN OF RUNNEL STONE SHOWS UNDERWATER ROCK 'LEE ORE' IN THIS POSN. NCA.
