Cause: vessel built as 'portreath' in 1907 by j blumer of sunderland for the portfield ss co. a '3 island vessel'. engine by j dickinson of sunderland. bought by the charlton ss co of newcastle in 1916 and renamed 'hurstside'. torpedoed and later sunk by gunfire by german submarine uc-54 while on passage barry to archangel. cargo 5250 tons of coal, 12 bags of mail, inc 2 secret bags, and deck cargo of 4 track laying tractors. crew abandoned into two boats, captain howe and 11 men in one and 12 men in the other. later recovered by the s trawler 'owl'.
