Cause: built in 1883 by r duncan & co ltd, port glasgow. owned at time of loss by the london, north western railway. one boiler, compound expansion engine, single shaft. passage dublin for holyhead. sank following collision with german barque alhambra, liverpool for new york with 700 tons coal, which altered across her bows. the barque was cut in two and sank at one with the loss of 18 lives. holyhead settled and sank within 20 minutes with the loss of two crew. (sibi).positional analysis: the position given in shipping casualties (bot 1883-84, p130) for the site of the collision plots 8nm ne of this wreck.archival analysis: alhambra also sank in the collision, having been cut in half. as a timber built ship, it seems unlikely much, if any of it would show up on marine survey. indeed, there is no candidate wreck in the mbes dataset. holyhead was damaged forward and sank 20 minutes after the collision. it should be noted the fore section ofthis wreck appears to be the more damaged.
