Cause: vessel, built in 1742 in amsterdam, was on her maiden voyage from amsterdam to batavia in the far east when she may have struck the gunners before sinking near george peter's ledge. (shipwreck index of the british isles).

THE MAIN PART OF THE WRECK LIES 200FT N OF THIS POSN AND ALTHOUGH ONLY A FEW CANNON AND ANCHORS CAN NOW BE SEEN THIS SITE HAS ALREADY PRODUCED MANY THOUSANDS OF POUNDS OF TREASURE INCLUDING 30,000 SILVER COINS [150,000 COINS STILL UNACCOUNTED FOR]. WRECK OWNED BY MR COWAN AND OTHER DIVERS DISCOURAGED. HE HAS REQUESTED THAT THE POSN OF THE SITE IS NOT MADE PUBLIC UNTIL OPERATIONS ARE COMPLETE. (HMS HECATE, REPORT OF SURVEY, APPENDIX 2, 16.7.73).
