Cause: ex-lord dawson, built in 1929, purchased by the admiralty in feb 1939. was used as a minesweeper until bombed & sunk by aircraft in scrabster bay.

H4811/75 10.8.77 SUBSEQUENT EXAMINATION OF E/S TRACES REVEALED WK IN 583639N, 033154W [OGB], HAVING SUNK LEVEL WITH SEABED. (HMS HERALD, SIGNAL DTD 3.8.78). CHART AS FOUL. NC 1462 H4811/75 14.3.78 POSN 104.75DEGS, 592MTRS FROM SCRABSTER LT. (HMS HERALD, 6.10.77). HH268/410/03 17.11.99 LOCATED DURING MAGNETOMETER AND DCS3 TRIAL IN 5836.658N, 0331.892W [OGB] USING DGPS. DIVED AND FOUND TO BE REMAINS OF A VESSEL WITH A SINGLE METAL RIB PROTRUDING FROM THE SEABED BY 4MTRS. THIS WAS SUBSEQUENTLY CUT AND LAID ON THE SEABED. AT THE S END OF THE WRECKAGE AREA LIES A SECTION OF ?GUNWHALE 6-9MTRS IN LENGTH WITH A MAX HT OF 1.5MTRS. THE MAIN PART OF THE WRECKAGE, THE BOILER, STANDS NEAR THIS 2.7MTRS OFF THE SEABED AND COVERS AN AREA OF 6MTRS RADIUS. BOTH THESE SECTIONS LIE IN AN AREA OF SCOUR 1.2-1.5MTRS DEEP. THUS THE HIGHEST PART OF THE BOILER IS ABOUT 1.5MTRS HIGH FROM THE GENERAL SEABED. DEBRIS, INCLUDING WIRES AND OTHER SMALL METALLIC SECTIONS, IS STREWN ABOUT THE AREA. THE BULK OF THE WK IS PROBABLY BURIED. REMAINDER WOULD NOT CAUSE A HAZARD UNLESS FOULED. (M FRENCH, FATHOMS LTD, LTR DTD 11.11.99). AMEND TO NDW IN REVISED POSN.
